Wire gauge question
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:09:57 AM »
HI,

I plan on installing a solar system next year but I am currently wiring my camp. I expect that I will have a combination of both AC and DC appliances. I was going to wire both AC and DC outlets in all of the rooms but I am unsure what gauge wire to use for the DC outlets. Anyone have any suggestions?

What voltage is your system ?

 and

How far from the batteries to your outlets ?

 and

What do you want to power off of the battery ?

I guess the voltage question is still undecided as I have not put it in yet.  As far as the other two questions; the batteries would be about 10-20 feet from the camp and I was thinking of a refridge, radio and a couple of lights.

Running 12 v dc can become a problem, any distance requires huge gauge wiring even for low amperage applications, if you're going with a/c, I'd stick with that. The wiring sizes are a lot smaller.

You could set up one dc plug or 1 location for using some d/c things, just keep the wiring runs short. You can find easily the sizes you need for distance/amperage easily doing a google search.
