3 phase brake switch

I am new to the wind power world and have been reading complicated and over simplified posts on many sites.my plan is to use a pma alt and run 3 phase down the tower to a box with a rectifier in it.my question is ,if I short the d/c voltage output from the rectifier to brake the blades will it damage my rectifier asm? I am using the diode asm from a delco 10si as my rectifier.if this is a stupid question go easy on me .I look forward to the expert info the seasoned wind power guru's can offer..

No if you short the dc output of the rectifier it will not generally damage the rectifier but you will have a fry up from shorting the battery. You would need some extra blocking diode or a change over shorting switch that disconnected the battery. Why bother if you have the rectifier at ground level just use a 2 pole switch and short the 3 incoming ac leads. Far simpler and safer and no danger of damaging the rectifier.

first thank you for responding.can you elaborate on your response?how would I  wire a switch in before the diode asm? I know it sounds simple but I do not want to wire it wrong. any help you (or any other)can give would be helpfull..thanks

All you need to do is short all 3 incoming ac leads. I don't have time to do a drawing but I am sure there some on this board somewhere.


If you use a 2 pole on/off switch, you common 2 poles and connect them to one wire, the other 2 switch poles go to the other 2 wires. When the switch is open it does nothing. when closed the two poles short 2 pairs of wires to the common one. It is effectively a shorted open delta and does exactly the same as using a 3 pole switch ( which would do just as well but cost more).
