Next, Pls??
« on: July 04, 2008, 11:48:29 PM »
Local Machine shop gave me some high carbon plate steel cutouts measuring approx 19 in in diameter. They measure 0.136 in thickness.

Have enroute 12 1/4 x 3 in N40 Neos.

Ultimate plan is a VAWT with highest output imaginable!

Have uncounted number of HDD mags, and 6 sets of N50 motor mags. These (takes 6 for a circle) measure about 1 3/8 diameter when assembled.

Advice anyone??

Thanks in advance,

Bill

you bettor start counting.

those disks are thin but you could use them with the hard drive mags.

19" x 3.14=59.66"circumference

divided by 1.5 for a .75" pole width and .75"mag spacing

looks like 40 poles.

i found that you can stack two layers of hd mags on a saw blade and that is about the same thickness as your disks.

so some thing like 160 or 320 hd mags if you use two per pole.

you may want to glue some wood or plastic to the back of those disks to stiffen them up

happy glueing !

4 of those discs stacked would give you about a 1/2" thick disc suitable for a 1/2" thick magnet (assuming the stacked discs make a nice un-warped disc). At 19 inches you have nearly a 60 inch circumference. This may work for a 24 magnet / 18 coil arrangement. For a VAWT, one solution is lots of magnets. About $100 worth of 2" x 1" x 1/2" neos on one laminated disc with the second 4 discs laminated but without magnets to return flux might give you an alt fitting for a VAWT.

The magnets you have seem an odd lot. Maybe you can do something with all the HD magnets but it does seem the hard way.

This is a good question wdesilvey, (I am still learning).

I recall experienced builders saying that once you have decided on a particular magnet, the backing disc thickness test is to take calibrated steel paperclip, and attempt to place it on the opposite side.

If it sticks, the plate is too thin, if it doesnt't stick, all the magnet flux has been properly channeled for achieving the maximum effect.

Thick plates are more expensive and harder to cut. If two thinner plates would work just as good, that would be a very useful option for me. Anyone?
