This is a good question wdesilvey, (I am still learning).
I recall experienced builders saying that once you have decided on a particular magnet, the backing disc thickness test is to take calibrated steel paperclip, and attempt to place it on the opposite side.
If it sticks, the plate is too thin, if it doesnt't stick, all the magnet flux has been properly channeled for achieving the maximum effect.
Thick plates are more expensive and harder to cut. If two thinner plates would work just as good, that would be a very useful option for me. Anyone?
