New Idea for Tower ?
« on: November 23, 2008, 06:07:54 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has tried either a comercial light pole or a wood utility pole as a tower.  Here are some links

Wood telephone/utility poles up to 55 ft

Steel Light Poles up to 60 ft

The utility poles are designed to be free standing and hold a lot more weight than the average residential wind turbine.  The steel light poles hold rather large and I would guess heavy lamps so I would think they would also work.  They are also engineered and rated for wind load.

Sure you can.  But do the math on the allowable wind loading at the top of the tower, and you will see that it will need guy wires for a windmill larger than 5-6 feet in diameter.

Buying one of those new is a pretty expensive way to get a tower, too, considering all the other work that will still remain to finish it.

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.
