Proper wire gauge size
« on: November 23, 2008, 11:50:43 PM »
I have about 70' I have to run three phases.  I was going to use 8 gauge, but I knew I had some wire at home.  I looked in my garage and found a few hundred feet of 10 gauge.  I don't want to drop a lot of voltage.  Do most of you think this will be ok for such a short run?

Using theory it seems I will be more than fine. I went to this calculator http://www.stealth316.com/2-wire-resistance.htm

and found the drop to be less than half a volt for 70' and an average of 5 amps.  Does this sound right from those with experience.

If this is for the high voltage grid tie inverter it will be fine.
