cracks in rotor pour
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:44:32 PM »
Title pretty much tells the story. Do I chip this stuff off and start again? I did re-read the part about ground up fibers in the pour. What is the purpose of the resin anyway?

Thanks

Hi

Do you mean stator or rotor, the stator is the bit that doesn't move.

Cracking in a resin mix is normaly down to lack of attention in the resin to catalyst mix, too much catalyst causes the cure to be too fast and the heat generated runs away and the mix goes exothermic, producing even more heat. The resin gives the stator, mechanical stability, if it impregnates the winding properly it will stop them vibrating and breaking the insulation down.

I don't see chipping it off as an option, if the cracking is too bad from comments others have posted on here it looks like a complete rebuild...

Rotor. Part with the magnets. The stator looks great, no cracks.

the resin is to help anchor and seal the mags

fibre is included to add strengh.

is it polyester resin?

how bad are the cracks ?

just like plaster repair if you v the cracks you could add more resin and firm it up.

maybe paint the thing with some kind of rubberized flexible paint to seal it up

I believe it is the polyester. Bondo brand I think. Next one will have the shredded fibres in it. Just a little learning curve. Have to shut the project down for a couple of days to go visit the family out in Ozona. Good news is that my brother has a massive supply of 4" casing for towers.

have fun
