Has anyone used a car starter?
« on: January 23, 2009, 07:58:28 PM »
I admit I am a newbie. Ive been doing research off and on now for a few years, and think I'm ready to start on this project.  I recently had to change the starter out of my truck, '91 f150, because all the teeth ground off(bad spring mech inside).  I took the starter apart and the wire inside is unlike anything ive ever seen.  It's a 1/32" by 1/4" ribbon.  There are 4 coils with 8 windings.  Usually when I see people re wind a stator they move up top a larger gauge wire, I think this is the largest.  Does anyone have any experience with an old starter?  I hate to be the first, because this is my first.  There are no permanent magnets.  I plan on replacing the sleeve bearings with ball bearings since the rotor extends really far out, and installing perm mags on the rotor.  I will post pics of this thing after I get batteries charged.  Thanks

Not sure what your question is but if you are hoping to use it for wind power then it is just about the most useless thing you could possibly start with. I won't be silly enough to suggest that you will do nothing with it but the end result will never be worth the effort.

Hi

To add to flux's comments most starters only have bushes not bearings, and some even spin in the aluminium front plate.
