160 amp bus alternators

I have 12volt 160amp bus alternator that I want to convert. is it worth the effort because i live in a very low wind zone. I like a Challange. and am a shade tree mecahnic

What you will need is a lot of magic.

Wnd turbines turn about 500 RPM's. (in a good wnd) Auto alternators need about 2000 RPM's to "start" chargng.


Low winds may give you 100-200 RPM's. (now There's your challenge). What you need is a (low RPM alternator). "google the board". Boxes, belts require a lot of wind power, just to get then started. I don't think there is enought migic any where to may it work right.

the 160 alternator would work great driven by a small engine but it takes to many rpms to get any use from it as a wind driven machine, espically in a very low wind zone. you would have to gear it up and use very large dia. blades to get very little usable power. pepa
