Here is a good place to start if you want to learn how to make a wind turbine

http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_wind.shtml

Look at the projects at the bottom of the page ...

How would you use your Wind power ?

oh wow thank you. well the school is going to hopefully pay for this project, so they get to keep this turbine for their electric lawnmower ,golf cart, and maybe even next years christmas light show.

I have a basic idea the type of turbine Iam trying to construct (VAWT). I really just need a mentor/living source from this field. To answer any questions I might have, because my lab teacher is not educated this field. you know. But if you would like to help in the construction, thats completly up to you. would be greatly appreciatated.

Well ,  you have come to the right place.

Let this forum be your mentor, there are many knowledgeable people here that can seriously help you. Do searches on this forum and you will find a wealth of information that has already been discussed. Don't be afraid to ask questions and show us pictures if you can't find something in a search.

It is very difficult to make a VAWT work, it can be done, but I want to push you toward HAWT as you can get much better results with less money.

Hello,

You may find this link helpful. Good senior project/science fair type of turbines.

Another Student in my class/ lab has already decided to make a HAWT . well if you can help me ,control the wild voltage iam getting, also how big of a battery bank should have to be safe .probally goin to use a treadmill motor with two VAWTs' side by side out a couple mountain bike rims , a belt, and small pulley on the the motor.

The battery controls the wild voltage.

The wild voltage is taken down to about 0.7V above the battery voltage.

I really doubt you will need a very large battery.

It is "a bit difficult" to get 50W out of a VAWT the way I believe you are thinking about it.

No idea where Mid-East would be.  If in the US/Can, this is the time of year the auto parts stores have a lot of weak (still usable for this type of experimenting) traded-in car batteries.  Might get one for the cost of the core charge, about $10.

If the VAWT works out, can trade the car battery back in on a deep cycle, recovering the $10.

Ask the counter guy if he can help.  And check the battery's electrolyte level.

And do your research on treadmill motors before buying one.

Most are not so great.

wow. thanks for commenting. but you should pass mid-east's website around. location is in Zanesville,Ohio ( http://www.mid-east.k12.oh.us/ )  well anyway . our battery bank may need to hold the charge of VAWT, HAWT and maybe even some solar panels or a generator. do you have any spec's on the size/type of treadmill motor that would give the the greatest results.                                               another quick qeustion. treadmil motor or an alternator out of an automobile, which would give me better results. Iam almost positive on how to tie in the alternator.

I'm up near Y-town.

The more actual charging amps you guys can make, the bigger the battery you need to store it efficiently.

Neither of your gen/alt choices is very great.

Forget about the car alternator, completely.  Not remotely suited for what you are trying to do.

For a treadmill motor on a VAWT, look for a higher voltage one.  Maybe 200 or 250V.

Also need the RPMs to be low, maybe lower than 5000RPM.

Not sure what your budget is.  I have some stuff here (not free but less than a decent ebay treadmill motor).

I have a treadmill motor that looks about 300 years old, makes pretty decent voltage/RPM, name/data tags rusted off long ago, flywheel/pulley intact, $17 (for bubblewrap and a bridge to use for a blocking diode, plus shipping) if you want to try it.  Google my user name for contact info.

Schools internet is on "total lockdown" I would need the name of the site to even get to view it.

well hopefully the school-board will take care of all costs/paperwork,and permits. or whatever else might be needed.

thanks.

probally last post this year

so when I get back from winter break I can reply

Anyway about that treadmill motor if you would be so kind to call the school and ask for MR. Dudus (school project).

hopefully the school will understand.

"if not"

{please reply}

or just stop by

but call either way.

thanks for the website trying to make a board of your design (dump controller) using a "cnc machine" as I type this.

well happy holidays

B-,

Box should be there maybe Tues/Weds.

It is not the motor Mr. D and myself talked about.

The one we talked about is DOA.

The one I sent has 4 brushes.  And 4 wires.

The way it is connected in the shipping box is good for higher volts with less amps at a lower RPM.

The bridge rectifier is to be used as a blocking diode.

http://i701.photobucket.com/albums/ww20/ghurd1/Sketches/BridgeAsBlockingDiode.jpg

Request fieldlines be approved for everybody.

I do not think any of the wind turbines will get very far without it.

The editors do a great job of keeping this a family friendly site.

And you REALLY need to Thank Mr. D for his backing on these projects.

He was ready and willing to pay for it, and the other goodies, out of his own pocket (after delivery, with a proper invoice, of course).

so I gave him a discount.  LOL

WOW.  Thank You so much. I received your package this morning.

Felt like Christmas again.

You've been a substantial help towards this project. I dont think I can thank you enough.

Hmm if you got free time in a couple weeks. You should schedule visit to see what your motor is getting itself into.

Hopefully by then.. it will be bout 95 feet in the air.

Well, I got a (mountain) bike rim and still got to figure out how big the belt is going to be after its all mounted togehter.

BTW (BY THE WAY) I nice idea with the soup cans. [very green] I'll be sure to recycle them after Iam done.

Better 95' up,

than another 5 years on my garage floor.

When you guys get further along, post a diary!

With a few suitably resized photos.

If you have questions for me about the motor, electronics, etc,

be best to do it via email.
