VAWT's in Popular Science
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:09:08 PM »
Hello,

I just picked up this issue of Popular Science on ebay. It was like $12 shipped! Published in 1934.

I have to say it is awesome. The article is for a proposed utility scale VAWT and it is the first time the term 'Wind Turbine' was used as opposed to 'Wind Mill', at least by them.

The rest of the issue is incredible. I'm not that old but it harkens me back to a better time when kids dreamed about getting a microscope for Christmas instead of an iphone and just about anybody would be willing to build what they want. There's tons of construction articles including radio sets, telescopes, and even a ammonia based kitchen chemistry set for the housewife that made ice cubes.

Also noteworthy are some pretty funny cigarrete adds. Camel has a good one with various athletes smoking on the field. Lou Gehrig says Camels are the best cig's for any athlete and he owes his success to them.

Perry

P.S. sorry if the pic's a couple pixels too long but it is a small file.

yeah, probably. But this is the original magazine. There is history in it. It's 76 yrs old! Can you imagine how many toilet backs it has rested on when not being read?

There are no less than 10 pages with microscope adds in it. Add to that it has a construction article on a microscope bench with drawers.

They used to be big. I remember my old Edmund Scientific. I was the paramecium hunter.

Man, You got ripped off.

You payed 8000% too much.

Says 15 cents right on the cover!

It certainly would be interesting to hear what they claim for output vs swept area,

and

anything about the PMA, like magnets, gearing, etc.

And any of the benefits of actually owning your own personal 'Wind Turbine'.

That is not too long before the big one in NE.

Smoking cigarettes was new at the time.  They didn't have much understanding of the long term effects.

In the context we know it today, "smoking" (cigarettes) did not exist until tobacco (meaning cigarettes) was made a high priority item in the WWI trenches, like bullets.

IIRC, food had a lower priority on the delivery schedule.

Pre-WWI people smoked a couple cigarettes a day.

Post-WWI people smoked a couple packs a day.

I have boxes of old ones from the 50's through early 60's, and others mixed in. Only great memories of grandpa. There was a different way of thinking back then, cant say we're any better for the change.

was just checkin out a old 1953 popular mechanics..saw this short story..

even back in 1916 they new sun flares heated up the earth--they had a lot of glacier

melt off back then..in the 50s again... go to the present--no sun flares=cooling!!

i heard on a radio talk show how they caught the outfit thats been pushing global

warming in a lie--in their own e mail to each other..that the earth is cooling not

heating up!!some parts of the world the glaciers are growing not shrinkin...

they didnt want to lose their grants or where ever the money was coming from[us].

so the way i see it the glaciers will once again start growing world wide..

just my RANT !!what ever happend to honesty in this country-i belive in the USA

but it seems like a lot of dishonest outfits are tryin to bring it down..

I agree , the lack of solar flares, and all we need(or not) now is some volcano eruptions and we could be in for some real cold weather.

But either way i see nothing wrong with weaning ourselves off the OPEC nipple.

I recently read an article where Canada was jealous that the US was going to surpass them in Renewable energy production! GO USA !

Whether its called global warming or Down with OPEC makes no difference to me.

The end result will be the same. We will be less dependent on the price of oil.

He must have gone walkabout or something. His last post was this one last July, near as I can tell:

People get busy, things happen.

IbedonC just dropped off the face of the internet about a year ago, too and nobody knows what is going on with him, either.

It seems folks change interests, lose interest, get busy and just drift away. Usually I just hope they are OK and did not get ill or pass away. We have seen that happen, too.
