Newbie getting started
« on: March 04, 2010, 08:33:37 PM »
Hi to all, I am new to this sight and wind power. I got the bug pretty bad and dissected a treadmill only to find a GS pm motor rated at 130 vdc 18 amps and 6200 rpm.

My question number one is removing the front hub, I see no set screw holes and I can not see if the shaft is threaded or the big heavy hub is pressed on. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with this??

My second question is I am guessing this might not be such a good motor for a wind generator due to the rpms are to high and I get very little resistance when I short the wires out and try to spin the motor.

When I spin the motor by hand I get about 4 volts.

Anybody have any ideas??

Thanks ahead of time.

Every one I ever saw was threaded, and almost all were left-hand thread.

Knowing that does not make them come off any easier, especially if there is the slightest hint of surface rust.

Not much good for a wind generator due to the RPM required.

Might look for something in the 200-400RPM range for 13V.

Thanks for the information, I really didn't know how low of RPM I should be targeting.

As far as the hub goes there is really no reason to remove it now.

Thanks again.

RPM depends on the blades.

If you are starting with PVC and 4' type stuff, maybe 250-300RPM.

Carved blades maybe 350RPM.

My motor did not have any threads, so two people with large screw drivers or homemade contraption with some C-clamps should do the trick.

As for the rpm, you are looking at least 400 rpm, maybe higher.  It depends on what voltage you want to charge at.  12v will require some well sized blades (less than 4 ft)  and at least 15mph winds.  If you just want to have some fun, I personally have charged some sets of AA batteries in packs of 2 ,3, or 4, which you then can later rearrange into a 12v string to power a laptop or what ever.  This would obviously be your cheapest route.

Gearing it up will be tricky and require a larger diameter than you may want (bigger = less control in high winds).
