Is this a decent choice
« on: March 27, 2010, 03:51:03 PM »

I tried previewing that but it didnt show up, hoping when I post it works ok.

I found this motor in a friends junk pile, took it home and spun it with a volt meter attached and it does produce power.  Now I know very little about these things, but I'm wondering what changes I would need to make to it to use it as a windmill generator?

Not really a good choice at all. To get it up to a point where you can charge a 12V battery it would have to spin at 1500 rpm. Way way too fast for a wind turbine.

Maybe could work with a rewire and lots of work but not really worth it. Sorry.

may make for a good Ev scooter motor. Try looking for ECM motors they are the best for the Staring point to learn from. I personelly like to use them They are basicly setup to go with little Changes. Check some of the stories and google the board for them.

good luck and good wind.

Welcome aboard.

It would work with a 1:5 Gear ratio for 12v  and 1:10 Gear Ratio for 24v. But for the beginner not an easy task.  A lot of people don't like gearing but hey it's how all the big boys do it.   And you have to have bigger blades to get the same power as a direct drive.  Necessity is the mother of invention.

Gearing for a turbine this size is a non starter. Totally different world for the 'big boys'

I geared one turbine so far using pulleys and haven't had any problems with start up, although I should of gone just a tiny bit bigger on my larger pulley because it just hit 11v at 12mph. And I only have 6ft diameter blades.  But haven't had time to change it out yet.  Decided to let it fly awhile to see how long it and the PVC blades last. And so far it's been over 6months and had several 50+ mph winter storms and it's still going. Only thing I bought on it was the motor for $25, everything else is just scraps. Used old saw blades for the hub some left over 4"PVC pipe for the blades, a front bicycle wheel hub for the bearings and a Push lawnmower wheel cut open for the pulley. and some scrap sheetmetal for a cover.  The covers way to big and actually pushes it out of the wind slightly kinda like furling.

Hi

I have one of those motors, I stripped it from an electric scooter.  I ran it from my pillar drill and it had to run at over 1000 RPM befor you had any useful voltage from it.One thing it did come with was a light chain and sprockets, capable of handling the torqu but it was 10:1, I would thing if you re worked it for 4 or 5:1 the losses would be less that belts because you would not need the tension to maintain drive without slipping.

I don't know how long the bearings would last though they are only oilite bushes with a felt pad.

I threw mine under the bench and decided that it would be too much trouble for what I would get out of it.

Looks like a nice motor to make a pedal generator out of

Hi

Good sugestion Woof.  They do generate plenty of power my pillar drill has a 700 W motor on it and managed to load it up before the blocking diode I was using went OC.
