A simple fix for a high efficiency furnace
« on: January 25, 2004, 02:17:21 PM »
My daughter had called and said her high efficiency furnace had quit working...after browsing around on the internet I ran across this posting on a forum 'Thanks a lot, I found the problem there was snow on the inlet of my high efficiency furnace...I cleared it off and it kicked right in....'

http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hvac/msg1222291231435.html

So I went over and it wasn't snow but frost

The outlet was putting out very moist air, like what most folks would call steam, and as the inlet is only about a foot away at the same height, the outlet had frosted up the inlet! ...same as snow.

Ah....everything is so much fun if you can keep it simple!  ( :>) Norm

Sounds to me like you should add a flue or something to provide better seperation between the inlet and outlet.  Isn't it a little dangerous to burn other than fresh combustion air?

Installed by a professional ....yes it does need some kind of seperation...it has been duly noted and he will hear from us. It still gets a large percentage of fresh air just that it gets humid air too. Appreciate your concern. Thanks RatOmeter. Norm

Norm,

My furnace is similar to yours, the two pipes maybe only 6in. apart.

However, my exhaust is a foot taller than the intake; the intake has a 180 elbow on top pointing down.

I've never had any trouble with it.

These units make so much water; I wonder how pure it is.  A fellow could water a small indoor garden or something.
