But here's how I figure it:

  1. w solar panel - $30 (got a couple of them at that price..)
  2. ah SLA - $20

Homemade LED lamp - $15

Controller kit from ghurd - $12.50

Brackets - $10

Cabling - $5 (not that long a run here)

.. with a total of $92.50 , about half the price ..

But the 7ah SLA and the brackets could both be salvaged..

Farmer of Volvos;

 Thanks for the LED light will have to visit one near by to see how well they light up.

Curious how some places still say "The Memory Problems " of NiCds. And twice the amount? of charge? I have them at 600ma so where 550ma is twice I'm not sure .

The light does look promising :-)

ALL;

   I'm going to go out in a limb here , if I'm wrong, G- can scold me directly :-).

What I think he was trying to convey, and that most of us missed; was that even though a lot of this stuff is fun, keeps us off the streets, is good practice, and in each and every way helps with lessing our impact of some kind.

This sickness isn't cheap, free or cost effective to try and out do the big boys.

Solar isn't cheap to get into, and unless you constantly and carefully plan what you're going to do it could take years to pay back , if that's what you're looking for.

To be very honest I have more than one of his assemblies, torch replacement bulbs, controllers, buggy lights, etc.

And regularly ask him for advice , when my brain is in a fog. He has real world experience with this stuff, in large scale too.

I believe what he was trying to do , was just that building a "light" was or could be expensive if just doing that by going to the nearest Radio-Shack style place and paying retail.

He and a very many of us, as well could build this light without much more than grabbing this-n-that from where-ever and soldering them up to work in a couple hours time.

As I said, I could be totoaly wrong, been that way at least once:-)

Got it! At 47 years old I have been building RE systems of different proportions since 1981, as an ex automotive engineer in Detroit I have seen more times the guys that make 100,000+ a year design stuff that never will work and go to the 30,000 dollar a year guy downstairs that actually builds his prototypes to make it work eventually, going back upstairs and giving the guy no credit at all in the end.

For an experienced guy, building a desklamp to burn 4 hours a day on solar is a no brainer atunder 40.00, thats why some of stepped into this thread.

I hear you on that!!

the hey why didn't say something about ALL the help you ogt from "down here"? never does get answered.

Smae in the ARMY too :-) The general thinks things, the captain tells the NCOs to make it happen the privates get to figure out what the Heck!! and then do it.:-)

In my pervious life, I was the guy back in the shop doing the balancing/blue printing on those wonderfull Olds 455s, purred with a Holley 650 double pumper. NOT anymore.

I always preferred Pontiac , MI to Detroit, MI the hospital building were much nicer:-)

Probably because it's located on Woodward Ave, you could burn some rubber in the 455 along the way...LOL.
