We ran some performance tests on the server and found that reloading the homepage causes scoop to eat up the server and that reducing the number of stories on the homepage dropped the load significantly. If you want you can change that in your preferences as noted above, but if you feel like being nice to the server it would be better to consume smaller 'bites' and just click the link for the next page at the bottom of the list....
