Oreck XL, Is it the brushes?
« on: August 23, 2004, 09:59:47 AM »
Hi everyone. Not sure if this is the right place to post this (I am looking for an opinion I suppose) and people into motor should be able to help.

I have an Oreck LX vacuum cleaner and after my wife sucked up a sock than clogged the fan, it doesn't work too well. By that, I mean that when I apply power it spins at about 100 RPM instead of the usual 7000+ (so it says). It also gets hot which I guess is because its internal cooling fan isn't spinning fast enough. I can't see anything inside that is slowing it down.

My question is, is it the brushes that are bad or is the motor just scrap now? The price of replacement brushes is $18 while a new motor is $50. I don't want to waste money on new brushes if it isn't likely the problem.

One other thing, is the motor useable for anything else if it can't be fixed? I'm guessing at a rated 7000+ RPM it doesn't have AE potential but I thought I'll ask.

Martin.
