I'm not sure I'd want to own any PV stock. right now
« on: February 23, 2005, 03:53:28 PM »
I'll try to find a link but Sandia is saying their 25kw solar/sterling devices are acheaving 30% solar-electric conversion rates. Platts POWER mag has a small blurb in the front of this months issue. The mirrors don't look that big in the picture and the sterling engine appears to be the size of a refridgerator and they say 25kw.

If we had aisles of engineers and unlimited budgets we'd have them too.

I wonder percentage of "off the shelf" parts & compounds spec'd into plans.

Also if the 25kw figures temperate lattitude or sunbelt Arizona.

More interesting to me is that at SES's site there's no mention, that I could find, of them collecting any left over heat from the 'cold' side of the sterling engine. Sterling technology seems pretty straight foward. I wonder what's patentable about what they're doing? A small scale version seems at least possible.

Their four cylinder sterling engine. so substitute for a standard one.

Can this this thing go into space?  I understand technology is getting closer to making that possible.  One guy was figuring 7% overall efficiency with today's technology with a moon based system.  Not much, but the energy is free.  The real problem might be structural degradation due to radiation.
