Which stores best? Gasoline or Diesel?
« on: February 06, 2005, 06:13:15 PM »
I have put away a few hundred gallons of Gasoline with treatment for long term storage (backup generator to solar), a friend told me that diesel can be stored even longer without breaking down.  I am trying to verify that this is true.

Does anyone know for sure the self-life of each Gasoline and Diesel, and also how is the best way to get the longest storage life of each?

TIA

I was told gas starts to noticably break down at around 6 weeks, and that diesel stores 'much' longer.  I don't know.

My truck has 6 month old gas in it now and it is running pretty rough.

Try this link for someone who sounded authoritative.  They mention algae as a problem in diesel, which I was not familiar with.

I think you would be better to pick whatever you use the most of in your daily life and rotate your stock.  For strictly storage propane is good, but it is not as renewable as diesel might be.

long term storage of both petrol and diesel is a problem encountered by boatowners frequently.  Try contacting your local boatstore for some difinitive answer.

I heard that in plastic containers gasoline lasts 6 months, in metal containers a year.

Sun light, even the light that gest through a plastic container can cut the life expectancy of the gasoline down.
