How do YOU store hydrogen? [CLOSED]
« on: April 04, 2008, 06:26:36 AM »
I've searched quite a bit and haven't found a lot of information about hydrogen storage as a battery. Does anybody actually have a working hydrogen generation/storage system that doesn't cost many many thousands of dollars? Would it be a dangerous bomb inside a propane tank at 200PSI?

Sorry, we do not discuss hydrogen unless you are discussing an actual project you have done [past tense]. This is a policy from DanB, so complaints to him.

Not really a home project. Traditionally it has been stored in cylinders ( not propane ones). I think the modern approach is to combine it in something that absorbs large quantities for the volume, some sort of occlusion process or something. Certainly it is not going to be a cheap process that can be adapted for home use.

This is all a very specialist industrial process and best left to the experts.

I pretty much ran into the same issue. its easy to make, and really nasty to make a mistake with. So cheap, easy, simple, probably isnt going to happen. if the Hydrogen was 100% pure and contained, it is my basic understanding that it would not be explosive until mixed with oxygen or some other component. It is also my understanding that buying hydrogen already in a tank is not a lot more expensive than making your own and just paying for the power used. I personally would love to run a car off hydrogen. But its not as simple as it seems. more oxygen is required than air will provide for most car/truck performance. For instance you might find that you have the power loss as if you used propane instead.  that brings me to the reason I wanted to collect my own. So i could have the oxygen too and use both to fuel a car or truck. That application could get pretty dam tricky fast because of the explosive nature of H and O. some day i will tackle it, who knows what I might get from doing it. probably a lighter wallet heh.
