Solar Thermal Heating
« on: November 18, 2007, 07:26:50 AM »
Oil prices for this season are over $3.50 a gallon in my area, so I was thinking of ways to reduce my oil usage.  My home uses hydronic heating, so a boiler heats water and hot water then flows through radiators where air blows across it; heating the house.  Since this system relies on hot water, I was thinking of supplementing the system with solar thermal.  Does anyone know if this would work?  If it would work, what is an estimated cost for a project based on a 4000SQ feet home?

Thanks

need bb,

You have given similar information on your situation. It will take a detailed calculation to get a real number. If you have your fuel bill from last year you may be able to estimate your needs. Then you can select from several options that will vary depending on location and climate.

Solar will work. All parts will need to be compatible. There are many compromises that aren't necessary with the brute force of 130,000 btu/gallon fuel.
