Three phase AC voltage
« on: August 13, 2004, 01:39:18 AM »
Hi,

I see on Xantrex solar converter Sun Tie XR output voltage at 240 VAC.

Home installation is a single phase 120 VAC or three phase 208 VAC.

What for is 240 VAC at the output of a solar inverter?

Also

Do you know any other manufacturer of a solar DC/AC inverter, 4 kW grid-tie with

48 VDC input?

Regargds,

Ex

Hi Ex,

I think there is 3 different voltages for use in different parts of the planet.I live in Australia and our line voltage is 240 volt single phase or 480 three phase.

Hope this is what you are after,

Regards,

Mos

Isn't that 415 three phase? 240 times sqrt 3.

In the Us it's 240 single residential and 480 three usually reserved for commercial.

The 240 volts is for North American split phase residential usage.

Every house in north America has 240 Volts coming into it.  We have two live lines and neutral. (Not Three phase.)  Things like electric dryers, stoves, and water heaters use this to keep the wattage up, but the current in each conductor down.

You'll never see 3-phase in a residential building, unless your on a farm, and that's all that comes in from the road for the needs of the farm (like grain dryers and stuff), or 3-phase has been specially requested for some specific reason.

Hi,

Chris - your answer is what I was looking for!

I didn't realise I have two pase 240 VAC in my home :-(

and no three pase power.  Now it's clear.

Thanks

Dan here..

for those wishing for three phase it can be had from single phase 220VAC which is everywhere in USA. I talked to a local fellow who told me some of how to do it. You need a scrap three phase motor that works. By exciting one winding with 220VAC and using the motor will spin..sometimes it needs a helper motor to get it spining ( small AC 110 motor) .. A cap connection is used to leg that is powered by 220VAC I think .. I am not sure of..its called a "stinger" cap.

anyway once spining it now GENERATES TRUE three phase by induction...in essence a rotary transformer.

need to do a google on "3phase converter stinger" maybe that will produce correct wiring of motor.

He claimed to use such an method to run 3phase AC equipment all the time..
