vw solar panels: are they waterproof?
« on: August 17, 2005, 09:58:53 PM »
Hi!

just ordered a fairly big lot of those vw solar panels from ebay-  I have yet to look at them, so Im not quite shure what to expect... but my main question is the title of this post...

Just trying to find out if I need to build a frame for them if I am going to use them outside, or....

Thanks for any info!

hi

yes & no the cells are under glass sealed in eva but the tabs coming out if the panels carrode very fast gone in a month, i would seal them up with rtv silicone.

I also would hine them uot of the plastic frame they are to big, asy to do they are screwed together.

open circiut is 24.8 vdc

short circiut is .210 ma

power 18.8 vdc

amps .170ma

cells # 42 per panel

6 panels in parallel will give you 1.02 amps for 19.2 watts

hope this helps

This forum must have a mind of its own. I didnt ask that question. My question was if I have 6 ea 20v panels put in sries for 110 vdc how do I change it to ac. I heard of a commutator but dont have any more info.I realize once I get it to a certain point I can run it through a inverter. Do I step it down or what...any clues.

You put them in parallel, to charge a 12V battery, connect a 12V store bought inverter to the battery.

A 20V panel is for 12V battery use.
