Caution About Mounting Solar Panels To Roofs
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:22:28 PM »
I just spoke with my roofing contractor about mounting solar panels to the roof. He says that mounting solar panels directly to the roof traps in moisture and heat, damaging the roof sheeting and rafters as the roof cannot breathe. He has removed solar panels mounted directly to roofs after 20 years and found the sheeting is rotten. In some cases the roof rafters were also damaged. He suggests mounting the solar panels away from the roof so that air can pass under them and also to mount them so that nothing gets caught under them. Just thought I'ld pass the word along. Rgds, Erich

Photovoltic panels need quite a bit of space to keep from burning up.

So I hope you mean solar water heater panels!

They're also more efficient if you mount them that way.  They need air circulation behind them to cool.  Output voltage is lower when the panels are hotter.
