Safe or Not
« on: April 18, 2006, 08:24:28 PM »
I've had some panels that are cracked, but I went ahead and installed it and they are all wired up. Seems like they've been working very good even though they are cracked. Is it wise and safe to have them up like that? They have been like that for about three years. I'm I more prone to getting a short or something like that? What kind of a remedy can someone suggest? Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is safe as far a not being a fire hazard or anything. . .

As far as a remedy, there really isn't much you can do, but let them work intil they quit and replace them. . .you could try to silicone the cracks, but that would end u 'shading' some of the cells and would likely cut production.  If they are working ok as they are, I'd leave them alone.

Your system may be complicated.

Do not let a major short happen between the primary PV outputs and the Morningstar controller PV inputs. Not likely to happen, but it kills the controller's mosfets.

Maybe put a diode for each PV before they are paralleled.

I think it will protect the SS-'X' controller and still allow for a max output for battery charging and a dump load.

Yes. Silicone.
