Intro kit for the solar beginner
« on: September 18, 2006, 04:51:09 PM »
Hello all...I'm just getting into all this stuff and came accross a small kit from Harbor Freight it has three 15 watt panels and a power center/charge controller for $200...you can get more stats from thier site.  Does this seem to be a good idea for the beginner like me to get my feet wet in the PV world?  I'm seriously considering ordering it in the next day or two but would appreciate any comments and suggestions...Thanks, DANO.

I would consider it a very good kit for the price. If you really want to get started it should be a every good one to go with considering im spending £70 ($140 USD) on a single 18w panel.

Quite a few people on this board have them and are quite good. For more info look at

Although apparently the charge controllers buzz when the batteries are full which is very annoying:

Every month or so HF posts a printable coupon for 20% off.  Wait for that to come around, and buy the panels for $160.

Thanks for the feedback folks.  I'll probably place an order in the morning.  I do have a Harbor Freight store in driving range (Mishiwauka, Indiana), but the catalog and web site say it's only available by those options.  Will the coupon still work assuming I can find/print one for an internet purchase? You might try giving the 'brick-n-morter' store a call. They may actually have them on the shelves. That's how I got both of mine. I love em!

Throw away the controller as soon as you open the box.

Get a Morningstar SG-4, ~$25. It may save that much in asprine.

They aren't great PVs, but fine to get your feet wet.  Can't beat the price.

Ditto to Ghurd's comment: "Throw away the controller as soon as you open the box.

I bought a couple of very cheap charge controllers from Northern Tools a couple of years back.  I think they were around 25$ a piece (about as much as the much higher quality Morningstar that Ghurd mentions), and each were rated at 7 amps.  Anyway, both of them -- after around a year or so -- eventually quit limiting the charge -- which can be dangerous, needless to say.  After all, that is what charge controllers are supposed to do, limit the charge.

However, I keep them anyway since the blocking diodes in them still continue to work            just fine (no surprise there).  This can be very helpful for some projects, such as using pedal power on rare occasions to supplement battery charging.  Without some blocking diodes, the power reverses and the pedal generator starts draining the battery when not being used.  Using one of these el-cheapo charge controllers to block the reverse current is the perfect solution.

So don't actually throw the controller away, put it somewhere in case one day you may need it for something else less important.

Thanks again all for the input.  I'd considered driving to the "brick-n-mortar" store but the round trip would cost me more in gasoline that the shipping charge, so I went ahead and ordered it on-line.  It means I can't play with it today, but it will only be a few more to wait.  Also, I checked out EBay....Lordy!  Of the almost 700 hits for "solar panels" maybe five or six looked interesting, in fact a couple of them were selling the same kit as HF for almost twice the price! Later, DANO out.

Google 'surplus solar panel'. At "73 dot com something" sells just the PV, by the skid load, for $300 PER PANEL!  ROFL!

What do you guys recommend for the 12v storage battery?  Can you use more than one with this setup?

Thanks.
