Help identify the solar panel I bought on Ebay
« on: March 23, 2007, 04:36:43 AM »
I recently purchased a panel on Ebay. The seller said that it was made by Solarex, and I believe him. It's very similar to the other Solarex panel that I own.

However, I need your help determining what model it is.

The dimensions are 29 3/4" high x 19" 3/8 wide. It's about the same size as a 40 watt Solarex SX-40. (See the specs for that panel here - http://www.solarpower.org/arts/pv/solarex-sx-40-50.pdf)

However, it's a 24 volt panel. I can't find any specs for a 40 watt Solarex panel that was 24 volt. Can anybody help me out here?

Here's a picture of the panel:

What are the open circuit volts? Around 22v is a 12v panel, around 40v is a 24v panel.

I'm assuming this is the panel he got on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Solar-Panel-Bp-Solarex-50-Watts-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ120097156621QQcategoryZ41980
QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (looks like the frame is missing in both his, and the Ebay pictures) The picture on Ebay shows a meter at 40 volts.

Not sure what you are looking for.

It is a 24V panel. I would guess the peak charging amps around 1.2A, and peak power about 34.5V and 1.1A

The lack of a frame concerns me.

Is the J-Box still on it?

Is the back covered in white plastic film?

Is the back blue with a 'paint brushed swirl' kind of texture?

Maybe sounds like it had a problem someone was trying to fix. I hope not.

Yes, that's the panel. There is a white sheet of plastic on the back of the panel. There is no junction box on this panel, but there are two leads that do not appear to have been tampered with. The panel produces about 35 volts in the sun.

I am looking for a spec sheet from Solarex that describes the panel, or at least a model number so that I know exactly what I have.

Thanks.

Looks from the front that it only has 2 leads, and not 4 terminals for connection for either 12 or 24V? Because of that, I expect it's very old from a marketing stand point. And Solarex sold out in '01.

I doubt you will find more information than you already have.

Make sure to seal the edges.
