Question on Glazing
« on: November 25, 2009, 02:10:43 PM »
I saw an ad in the paper for some glass sheets 28" x 36".

Called the guy and he said it was mirror glass, double strength, crystal clear.

I was wondering if this glass could be used on a solar air heater. They will be mounted vertically and only will see sun in the winter.

The price is too good to be true, $3 per sheet.

My concern is, will it pass the proper light wave?

The proper light wave length passed is "all of them"?  Which no glass does that anyway.

I have no clue what "mirror glass, double strength, crystal clear" means unless it is a mirror.

Doubt the seller knows much about it in this context.

Myself, if I was pleased with the price and size, etc, it wouldn't bother me to try it!

Glen,

The price is right, the size is close to right.

I know they can make different blends of glass, I guess as long as it's not low E it should be okay.

I'm going to check it out this weekend.

The owner said he got them from a glass company closing that makes mirrors.

He said that he cut a broken one, so it's not tempered.

Thanks

Sounds like he's saying it's glass for making mirrors but not silvered.  Strong, unbubbled, untinted, very flat and non-distorting.  Better than window glass optically - but not shatterproof.

If so it's overkill (unless you want to put a concentrator behind it) but should be fine.  Unless it's near a driveway, road, playground, or other source of flying stones.

Check to see if the edge of the glass is very green.  Green is indicative of high iron content and that iron absorbs IR.  If the edge is not green, you have a winner.  If the price is right... it's probably worth a shot either way.
