On a web site I went to, to look into batteries.  There are these abbreviations:

BP Series - General Purpose

EP Series - Extended Performance For Cycling Applications

EVP Series - High Energy Density, Long Life Design

HR Series - Excellent High Rate Performance for UPS and other Applications

MPL Series - Multi-Purpose, Long Life Design

RT Series - Recessed Terminals (Used for small UPS/APC Systems cross ref. To CSB HC Series)

which one should I choose?

Is this bank to save the batteries and sell back later at a better price?  To use as a nuclear shield? Power your electric car...............??????

To get decent answers folks need to supply enough information to help solve the problem.

Ok this time I looked at your site, assuming you are sourcing batteries for a renewable energy system, ie house, then I think you are looking at the wrong site.

Google for lead acid batteries, but have a look here..

im not from aus....and Im planning on running 400Watt lights for 10 hours per day on average.  During the Night I will recharge the batter or batteries with an alternator.

This is a really stupid question, but why can't you just run the generator to run the lights for the 10 hours?

There are efficiency losses in running a generator to charge batteries, then more losses running the lights from the battery, especially if the lights are being powered through an inverter. Might be more efficient in that situation to just run the generator. . .

Just get one that is running at 75-85% of it's capacity for best efficiency. In other words, to run 400W of lights, get a 500W generator, not a 2000W generator.

The other stupid question is why do you need the lights during the day. . .

you definately want to use sealed batteries, dont want any acid vapors harming your customers :)

hint- dope dont care if you run the lights during the day or the night, its artificial lighting, afterall. if you are going to run the genny at night, run the lights at night. no batteries at all.

you really have 400w of lights for your fishtank? what kind of bulbs? can you change to a more efficient type? do you have a tank heater? how will your neighbors feel about you running a genny at night to charge your batts? why not run the genny during the day?

Correction, it's 260watts and i might run other things off of it too. The apartments i live in, i don't have to pay for the water i use. I'm going to try to rig something like a water turbine to hook up to my water facet. i will do this long enough to charge the battery back up. i know this sounds stupid, but like i said i'm just experimenting.

Didn't I just say I was experimenting..jeese, once i work all the bugs out I'll know what to add next.  You wouldn't have a cow if i was burning a filthy gas or diesel engine. I'm on a very very very limited budget.  So when I get this part figured out I might got to Wind or peddle power hehe...seems how I need to get back in shape.

will have a 200 gal soon , and have 4 VHO's on it (600 watt icecast), like I did before

guys , you gota have the lights for the corals to grow, closest to actully sun light the best

yes long ago I was real close to breaking down and buying a metal halide(SP).  But I didn't want to pay over $400 for a light.  So i paid over 300 hehe.  But then I read into this stuff, and now im hooked.....and broke.  So I'm taking little steps.  I've got a 80amp alternator coming to me via ups right now. Over 1900ft of 18awg magnet wire.  I've gotten a 200VDC 30,000MFD capacitor, and a bridge rectifier.  Though i think the rectifier is to weak, that is if I need it.  Do car alternators come with recifiers....well they couldn't if they are kicking out AC huh?  ok i'm rambling....

Anyway my point is, is that i don't plan on using my water a source of power for along time.  Just getting my feet wet.....no pun intended(sp)  ;P

It seems like a sin to waste water for an experiment that even a rookey like me could give better advice! Why don't you just put some wheels on the tank and roll it outside during the day to get the benifet of the natural sunlight. You can search this site for knowledge to build a wind genni to supply all your power needs and your land lord may also continue to let you have free water. But if you waste his water that would be wrong!

Hope you get it worked out to an earthly friendly result!

put the tank where the sun can hit it. jesus.

I forgot to say that if putting wheels on the tank is unpractical, you may want to think about installing a SKY LIGHT with a reflective duct. These things put out a tremendous amount of natural sun lite and IT IS FREE from Heaven!

Good luck!

guys guys...I'm on the second floor.  Putting letting the sun hit it, would not make it look all that cool.  I cannot alter the building in anyway, inside or out.  This is a complex, with close to 70 units.  Me using acouple extra 1000gallons would barely show.  This apartment doesn't have to pay for the water anyhow.  If you know anything about marine aquariums you wouldn't suggest putting it in a window, or puttin wheels on it.  55 gallons weighs alot.  Nor can i stick a wind genny out the balcony...the nazi apartment manager would have my head.

this whole idea is so half-baked i cant even think.

  1. do you know how little power is in a stream of water from your tap?
  2. do you understand the environmental costs of wasting a thousand gallons of water a day? forget the $ costs for a second.
  3. if the tank weighs so much, how is your nazi manager going to feel when it breaks thru the floor? i bet you have a no waterbeds rule.
  4. you have 0 budget, so you would rather buy a crap load of batteries and a generator than use the SUN? Just cause it 'would not make it look all that cool'?
  5. you live in an apartment so crowded you cant move, and you plan to run an alternator all night?

wtf are you thinking :)

Well it is aparent that my original question is not going to be answered.  If you don't know the answer please refrain from using such a insulting demeaner(sp).  If you knew what kind of recycled piss water we have in this town you wouldn't care.  Again, even though rite now im pissing against the wind saying this for a third time, Im just experimenting.  This isn't giong to be a permanent deal.  Oh, and no there isn't a water bed rule even though a water bed contains way more water.  There are too many issues for me to begin thinking about when it comes to putting a marine tank in a window.  But hey if nobody can get past the fact that I was concidering a tap water approach to my first try, then i geuss im just out of luck and should go on my own.

all right- hows this.

all the bats on that page look sealed or agm. most folks here are not using either of those because a battery tends to lose fluid over its life. maintainance of that issue is much easier if the batt has caps over the cells so that they can be inspected/refilled. one of the original posters on this thread gave you a good website about just that.

you should shop around some more, and do some searches on this website about battery banks. there are lots of issues to be considered like outgassing of corrosive, explosive gasses. the big winner on price for me at the moment is 6v golf-cart batts from sams club.

you want something that is deep cycle, not automotive.

JW;

  Here's my take on this.

1.) can't put the tank in front of a window due to algae growth due to not having the Marine life to keep in check.Right? same problem for people with hydroponics whether using a flood method or float method or even a wick system ( I use all 3 in the winter).

Okay ,

As many have said: you would be better off going with deep-cycle batts. If your into Marine life then you should have access to places with boats, or atleast know someone who does. Go see them about deep-cycle batts.

The SLA are going to cost more anyway. I have two rows of 10 SLA's , got'em free, only reason why I have them , and they don't even come close the amount of energy they can store.

Go with the Cycling side of recharging the batts, this way you get exercize and the noise for the running faucet doesn't get on your neighbors' nerves. If the water there is that bad you wouldn't want it anywhere near something you've built and would like to keep/ reuse; Also less hassle for trying to keep the electronic dry.

If you get the SLAs for free then by all means use them but make sure that when arranging them into load banks , to keep them in similar volt & Amp hours ratings. This way you'll have less problems with keeping them all equally charged.

Also, don't let the SLAs get hot from sun light or your bulbs as they will dry up and crack.

BTW: What kind of fish?

Bruce S

PS if you can't already tell, people here giving out free advise tend to want to get right to the point. We can egt short tempered, including ME, but we all will help as much as possible and do care dearly for the environment. IF we didn't we wouldn't be here.

Good luck on your testing.

I understand someone saying that the faucet idea was bad...just wasn't very constructive on how it was done. ei..could have said I that is a very bad idea and this is why etc. etc. but any-hoot.

I have a Gold striped Maroon Clown fish, a Fuzzy dwarf LionFish, a strawberry Dottyback(flourescent purple, don't know where they get strawberry from).  I also have close to 30 purple Mushrooms(softcoral)<started out with just two tiny ones>, 1 brain-coral, 1 tree sponge(orange), and an butt-load of calurpa(sp), which once it gets to where it is now i sell it back to the fish store.

Oh and by the way i live in Oklahoma.  No im not some trailer trash redneck.  Im just short on resources.

j- the biggest problem with renewable energy at this point is that it costs more than the power out of the wall in most all cases, and it is not as reliable, unless you go all out with multiple sources and a big bank (which just makes it even more expensive).

so you should be very aware that if you are short on cash, you are going in the wrong direction. conserving grid power in your apartment, and using that grid power to run your lamps will cost you less in the long run, wont piss off your landlord, and will be safer to boot.

now, if you just want to play with RE and dont care about the feasability or costs of this hobby, you're in the right place- just stop talking about the money, cause you are going to be spending it, not saving it :)
