Another Battery Question well, several...
« on: May 12, 2006, 08:09:41 PM »
What voltage should I charge my 2v batteries at? Im testing these so I want to charge them individually, is it irrelevant as long as thier not getting overcharged? Also I have one old cell that had been emptied, should I put 100% Sulfuric Acid or part acid part distilled water? or just distilled water? will adding a bit of fresh acid hurt an old battery?
Thanks,
George

A 2v cell should be charged at around 2.5v. Not sure about the second question. Ive never done it before.

George,

Of the top I can think of four different CHEMISTRIES of liquid filled batteries.  By 2V it seems you might have FLA - "Flooded Lead Acid" cells - BUT, you could have AGM, Gel or SLA batteries. They all should be treated differently.

So - take the advice you get in mind of the lack of information you gave.

Never put 100% sulphuric acid into any battery.

Normally batteries once filled should only need distilled water.

If the thing has been spilled and left for long it will likely be sulphated beyond recovery.

If you want to try and save it, I would fill it with water with a spoonfull of EDTA added and try to charge it. It will take a long time but it may respond. It will require several charge/ discharge cycles.

When it shows signs of working, empty it out and refill with diluted acid at about 1.25 sg. Fully charge it until the sg is constant then adjust the sg for standard value ( compare with the others) likely about 1.25 to 1.28 depending on duty it was intended for.
