Used VRLAs in OK City
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:31:17 PM »
Hey I'm in Oklahoma City doing a battery replacement. Most are still good and are 2003 mfg. I'm taking them to Advantage Power Battery for disposal and getting $.08/lb. Not sure if any of yall are in or near OK City but Advantage might be willing to sell some of these by the lb. They seem to be good folks. The batteries  are C&D UPS 12-310FR and NorthStar 12-370 and 12-390, 280 total.

I'll be hauling these tomorrow (3/16) and will probably try to take 8-10 home.

I wish I'd thought to post this sooner.

I'm up by Tulsa, if you could check on availability and cost I'd like 4 or maybe 8 batteries.  Working on a small 48 volt setup!

Thanks

They weigh around 80lbs, I'm selling them to Advantage Power Battery in OK City as scrap. You'll need to call them to see if they are willing to sell any "as is" in stead of sending them to the smelter.

We just finished the swap out and will be hauling them to Advantage tomorrow.

Hey if they will sell them, post the info if you don't take them all, ok

Also what is the amphours on these?

If a good enough deal I might even drive over and get a load of them myself if there are enough.

I called Advantage Battery this morning and they will sell them for $12.00 each, they are located at 312 N Rockwell in OKC, Im only picking up about 4 of them, so there will be plenty left. The AH ratings for the C&D UPS 12-310FR is 85Ah, 95Ah for the 370's and   I'm not sure on the 390's. The 310's weigh 67lbs and the 370's weigh 82lbs, again I dont know about the 390's.

OK, I couldn't refuse this offer for my addiction. The batteries are good. Marvin was delivering a load at Advantage when I showed up. He's a wealth of information about batteries. I hope he will share his testing method with the group. I bought some (24) of the Northstar NSB 12-370.

In case the pic isn't clear, 400 watts per cell at 4C, 12 volts 100Ah, 1.8 VPC at 77 degF. Float volts 2.27 VPC at 77 degF. sealed batteries. Marvin said they tested out as good as the new batteries replacements. Advantage will also replace them if you get them home and they are not good. These batteries were $20.00 each. There are about 250 left. This is my nearly new stack.

Thanks, I'll look them up and see how far it is for me to drive there.

Maybe I have things to do in that direction so it won't be too bad a drive for a few extra miles to pick them up if they still have them.

I normally use a Midtronics Micro 740 Digital Battery Analyzer for batteries that aren't installed. I picked it up at a pawn shop for $150.

When they are installed and I can isolate the string with a circuit breaker or disconnect, I use the High Dollar Alber CRT 300 supplied by my empoyer.

If I can't isolate then I use the AC millivolt/DC Float voltage check to determine if any have high internal impedance. If they do the AC Millivolt will be high. This is due to the fact that the ripple voltage on the charging buss will be divided among the individual cells as if they were a series string of resistors. This is a tricky test as the ac millivolt reading can be affected by noise.

Another trick I use to determine if series strings have any bad batteries is to check the AC current. If any cells are open the current will be low. This works best if there are multiple strings to compare with.

I normally work with UPS systems that have 120VDC bus or higher. Most these days are 480v.
