battery found update
« on: June 10, 2007, 02:42:51 PM »
I thought I might update the news on my new used battery. it is 24volt at 375ah 6hr rate. to the best of my knowlegde i have brought it back to 80% of capacity after numerous charges and discharge cycles.yesterday i moved it to the battery house and put it in service.if all works out my $100 will be well spent.

I tend to be quite skeptical of recovered used batteries.

How did you determine the recovered capacity? You can't tell just from terminal voltage since that only gives an approximation of the percentage of returned charge to the ACTUAL capacity.

The only definative way I'm aware of is to do a timed discharge at an appropriate rate.

Good luck with it in any case.

I arrived at that conclusion with the use of a hydromiter. however it is  somewhat of a guess and time will tell if it wasw worth it.

Sorry, a hydrometer will only tell you something about the state of charge, but not anything about the actual capacity.

It's highly doubtful that a well used battery will have anything close to it's nameplate rated capacity.

Outback;

What, honesty is not what you wanted?

How bout this:

Wow. man, friggin cool. I bet it will outperform a similar factory unit, dude.

Feels nice n fuzzy don't it? To bad its just a bullsheet feelgood line.

I guess you wanted approval and not honest feedback? Funny how often that is the case.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers.

not exactly tom,i suppose when you and sam get a new battery you do a timed discharge on them to0 see if they are holding 100% capacity? it was just a guess based on what i had to work with and samoa asked.next time i'll just keep my mouth shut.

Well outback,

It is great that you are salvaging a battery and I hope you have resurrected it to its' previous condition.

However, just because someone puts a Volkswagen Diesel fuel cap on their dually pickup it won't get 50MPG. Samoa and Tom are stating facts while you are stating hope and guess. When you are fighting in the trenches and someone there tells you the clip you just stuck in your gun may not be full they don't deserve shooting. And, you may want to check that clip.
