DC motors for pumps
« on: June 04, 2007, 02:01:05 AM »
Does anyone out there know of suppliers of 56J face DC motors in .33 to .75hp range for close couple pumps? This my last gasp for answers before having to go to a quite spendy pedestal pump setup.

Thanks, Mac

Jabsco makes dc impeller pumps, they might have something you can use.  Most marine supply places sell there pumps.

I used a DC motor off Ebay and used a pulley and belt system to couple to a pump.  That allowed me to get the right  rpm match without being too concerned with matching shafts or horse power.  The motor was a 3600 rpm motor  used on bicycles and the pump  I found in a local recyling center. I mounted it to a board, tried a few pulley combinations and used a bungie to keep the belt tight.  Works great, low power use to pump from a surface tank and run two sprinklers at a time in the garden.

ghurd is correct. Grainger has several available. Look for pumps, dc or ciriculator pumps.

I looked at Grainger. The motors are 56C, 56J is needed for close coupled pump, and the pumps are .125hp. That wont meet irrigation requirements of 25ft elevation and 10psi for emitters. I need 20gpm at 50ft total head. Ill probably have to go pedestal pump route like Chris did. Im interested in how the bungie belt tensioner setup works, Chris.

Thanks guys.

I was loosely following a design I saw several years ago in Homepower magazine.  He used a capacitor start motor from Graingers and a positive displacement pump instead of a standard centrifical pump. He used a lot less power with that arrangement.

I tried to close couple my pump and motor,  but the motor was stalling and overheating. So I used a two pulleys, on the motor  1/2 the circumfrance of the one on the pump.  I screwed the pump onto the board. Then bolted angle iron to form a pivot point and used the heavy bungie to tension the motor pulley away from the pump. My motor had two ears on it's side to pivot . Other motors would need some other way to pivot.
