will this work?
« on: July 01, 2004, 10:10:37 AM »
I am new to wind energy and my questions might seem a little silly to you experts.

My question is " are blades that are originally designed to move air, good for driving a generator"?

The reason I ask is because I am the proud new owner of a set of 7 ft blades off of a industrial cooling tower. 7+7+(2ft.hub) = 16 ft diameter rotor.

These blades are a carbon graphite coposite that are designed to move masive amounts of air.

The cooling tower fan had 4 of these blades and required 100 HP motor to drive them.

No' the airfoils and twist are backwards.

Hi,

Despite what I've read I think these will work, maybe not as well as purpose build turbine blades, but just maybe well enough.

I use box fan blades, so much smaller than what you have it aint funny. However these turn small stepper motors, so I don't see why these wouldn't spin a biggie.

It'll work well enough. You won't have to worry about overrev and high winds throwing blades.

I remember Ed from windstuffnow talking about making a simple brake combined with a lever and spring to measure the output, after you've determined how many ft/lbs per min ...then build or get a alternator/generator to closely match.

Do you have some pictures?  I suspect that you might have to modify the hub to make them work properly.  Remember that you want the flat side of the airfoil to face into the wind.

For a good intoduction to wind generator blade designs have a look at Hugh's booklet here:

Can you cut them loose and bolt them to a new hub? If you can I think they would work great.RobC

Why not just turn the whole thing around?

If I can figure out how to insert photos, I will provide photos sometime next week.

Today is the start of Canada Day long weekend and I will be in another province.

I only have 2 of the 4 blades and no hub.

I will have to make my own hub. It looks like it will be easy to adjust the pitch of the blades.

see you next week

I will provide some photos next week, when I have more time. Out of town for a holiday.

I dont have the hub.

If the airfoil on the blades is not a true airfoil but just a curve then you can just turn then around. But if they are a true airfoil shape thicker in the front tapering to the back ( Clark Y style )then turning them around won't work very well because you will be run the airflow over the airfoil backwards and the only solution is to reverse the pitch. Hi,

I think that they look good.

You might put your pictures on

a new story, because this thread

is now so far behind others.

What kind of generator are you going

to use with the blades?
