More Monday Madness
« on: April 05, 2005, 10:24:42 PM »
As usual, Monday was another productive/fun filled day up here.  Nothing terribly new or exciting happened - but here are some of the pictures anyhow.

Our freind Adam came up which was a fun surprise.  Adam was with on when we went to Hugh Piggott's Seminar on Guemes Island in 2003.  Pictured above Adam and George are fitting the tail to the single rotor machine we're building for DanF.

So DanF's machine got finished.  We got all the hardware in the blade hub, the tail fitted etc.  I'm still a bit worried about heat in the stator on this one.  I dont think it will be terribly efficient in high winds and it might overheat.  We'll see - easy fix if it does.  I'm curious to run it as it is for now and see what happens.  It should furl quite early so that will help.

Here's a fun picture of DanF's wind turbine with mine, and dogs...  in  the background.

Scott brought up two 11' blade sets made from laminated cedar.  Here he's oiling them and assembling the hub.

There are both new blade sets drying in the back of my truck.

DanF's wind turbine is going to go on a lattice tower that's right beside his house (about 10" from his wall).  His place is a two story cabin.  His lower roof is easy to get onto, I'm making a short ladder to make upper roof access easy.  We'll be able to assemble the tower and machine from the top of his highest roof.  With luck - if the weather is nice, that will be next Mondays project.

Here is the top of Dans Tower.  Its a lattice tower.  We cut the top off, and welded in brackets and stubs of 2.5" pipe.  The very top of the tower will slide down into that so that we can lower it to roof top level, put the machine on, and then raise it up with a rope/pully about 10' above his roof top.  The pipe that slides in here will be held up to its highest position by a pin, and there are set screws in the larger pipes so that we can tighten it down and hopefully it wont rattle too badly.  After I took this picture we also welded a pully to the top of this assembly.

We got this cute little 2.5HP diesel from George at utterpower.com.  While it might be easier to simply belt an alternator to it for battery charging.. it wouldn't be much fun!  Were building a PMA for it.  Hard to tell from the pictures, but the magnet rotor has a steel band welded around it.  This runs at 1150 rpm and were a bit worried about magnets flying out.  We're going to try to build a commutator for this alternator so that it can electric start.  Should be a fun experiment.  The engine is water cooled, so we'll tie it into Scotts nifty radiant floor heating system.  At this time Scotts only power comes from a very small PV array, his Homebrew Hydro electric plant (which has run flawlessly since we installed it almost a year ago even through the coldest months), and his homebrew wind turbine (which is now an 11.5' diameter machine on a 50' tower works really well for him).

As usual the day ended with a very crowded shop, pizza - and lots of begging dogs.  At one point there were 11 people visiting  (my shop occupies half of a 10 X 50 mobile home) and about an equal number of dogs.. including a rather large newfoundland named Martha.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

So when is the barn rasin'? That shop is gettin' mighty small.

Looks as if Nothing exciting might be different from another point of view. I had to look at the photo of the tower twice before I gathered what you were saying. That is a really nice setup to get the height out of it.

It's all new and exciting to me. Great stuff.

the  'Barn Rasing' is hopefully about 4 weeks off... as soon as the ground thaws, if funds permit, I'll start a small shop, about 640 square feet.  Small - but it'll seem large compared to the 300 square feet Im in now.

Another Monday and another great job :)

I am starting to love Mondays on Teusdays. Always waiting for that new Monday post to come out.

Good luck on the barn raising in 4 weeks, hope it goes well and you get it done. If your held back to 8 weeks for any reason though, like the weather, I would be glad to drive out and lend a hand. I am tied up till school is out, then I can travel. Love my kid, but I'll be so glad when she is out of school, 4 more years and I am counting the days.

Love the kid, hate the school year!

Looking forward to seeing how that mill works out with Arts blades and only one rotor.

I am still thinking about using dual rotor on mine, or at least a plain steel plate for a backing.

Hey, check those trailer hubs and about 1984 Ford/Mercury 4 lug cars!! Just a thought, I did not have time to pull a tire yet though. I was walking by one of mine I been meaning to strip down and geuss what. Yep I looked at the 4 bolt wheel and said "Hey that looks pretty close the the hub size for Arts blades! I got the hub, held it against the wheel and it looks mighty close!! If I can tommorow I may pull a wheel and see if it actaully does fit. Just holding it there and looking close it looked like all the lugs were in the correct spot to slide through and also maybe the center hub is correct too, but not sure. This was an 84 Mercury Marquis with a 4 bolt wheel of course.

Maybe another source for cheap parts since you ran out of Volvo's in your area :)

If I get a wheel pulled and it does fit the blades hub then that is what I will be build mine from I am pretty sure. I need the engine for a truck and the rest of the car is junk anyway.

Good luck with the new mill!

On the diesel:  Could you use the same technique as a brushless DC motor (switched MOSFETS) and skip the commutator?  I'd think the PMA would be make a fine brushless motor for starting the engine.  You'd just need some sensors to switch the phases sequentialy.

Hey,

If you guys get the mill to run as a motor to start that deisel, are you giong to start  building electric motors too?? I bet you could build a pretty good one with lots of HP for an electric car, maybe 15-20HP?? That's about the size in the kits I have looked at so far.

Your Mondays are always inspiring.  If I get the chance I'd love to arrange to drop by and pitch in.  (I'll bring the beverages) Last year I lost a couple of days of vacation because I didn't take enough time off and couldn't carry it over.  I promised myself I was not going to let that happen this year.  Rich Hagen

Sweeet! I am very curious as far as what the output will be for the genny on the diesel. Please keep us informed. As usual an excellent job and another fun day!

If you're building a stick shop, then I'm sure you'll have plenty of help. Heck, wait till a good monday, get some chainsaws, and you should have enough people to build a nice log shop. :)

You are always an inspiration!

You got me thinking here now too, I have a 12X60 trailer house I use just for storage now, kinda old beat up thing. If the rains stops, the back wall comes down and the Lathe/mill combo goes in! Rip out the old bathroom walls and I got half the trailer as one large room! All the stored stuff can be put in the front room/kitchen half.

No power connected to it though, so I had built what I reffered to as a heat room when we lived in that trailer, just a large room on the side at the rear door where I put the wood burner. What better place to put the batteries :)

Not like I am going to be burning much wood there for awhile now anyway. And I got the cable I can run up to 100amps under the house and up to the breaker box in that back room shop area. That should be plenty since I only have 5k inverter, 41amps, 82amps at max surge.

How high above a nearly flat trailer roof would you think I should set a mill? If I do that shop in the trailer I got a couple tall thin trees I need to cut, perfect to bolt to the trailer house and set a gennie on. Too tall, but I can cut them short of course.

I'd probably have about 4' blades, not sure if I would mount the 8' ones there or not. Might be a good test area for those though, so I might.

Would the PMA stator be able to take the torque being used as a motor?

Jack Belk says "It seems with what I have set up here....lots of extension cord drag and altitude factors (7500' ?), the MP <Minipetter> is fully able to power from 300 to 400 watts (with experimental excursions to 900 watts on occasion) for eight hours on ... a quart of diesel fuel.

That is, using a CS130D delco 12VDC alternator, 105 Amp with  HD 50 Amp diodes, etc.

I'll bet Dan's Minipetter will do even better with te PMG generator/alternator.
