48v gen update

Here is what the wind generator is producing.

First some background on the build for the ones that haven't been following my project.

Its a 48 volt machine with 10' blades less 2" off each blade from a mishap.

It's a 24 magnet (50 x 36 x 10mm) 12 mags each rotor, 10 coil arrangement (5 Phase) 270 turns of 0.8mm wire.

80m run of 10mm^2 copper cable from gen to batt.

All on a 65' tower.

I have a weather station setup on my roof that tell me all I need to know about the weather (wind speed, direction, temp, pressure, rain fall and a forecast) but its not actually where the tower is so the stats could be a little off as interference from the roof might give false readings from wind.

I have seen already about 1 kW (20 amps)from the machine at wind speeds of 40 kmh as per my weatherstation.

I haven't seen the wind generator furl out of the wind yet (tail might be too heavy)

It doesn't start giving me power untill about 10 kmh which gives about 1 - 2 amps and sits at 5 amps 15 - 20 kmh.

Its pretty hard to get a good readings on wind as the weatherstation only updates every 128 seconds to save battery power.

I am pretty sure I am in a low wind area so I should maybe do another stator to get the best out of it.

cheers

If my conversion from kph to mph are correct, that is a pretty good result and I don't think you will better it much with another stator.

To see if a slower stator would help, you could try it into 36 volts. Remember to compare watts not amps to get a true comparison.

Also in the 15 kph winds you could add a bit of resistance when on 48 volts and make sure you are clear of stall. Probably need a fair bit to make much difference at 48v, try 5 ohms for a first attempt.

If there is a lot more wind at hub height you may be able to tune it a bit, but if that is the wind you have up there you won't do much better.

Well done.

Thanks Guys,

I will get 3 car batts and see how it performs at 36 volts (good idea flux)

cheers
