Piggott 4 foot
« on: February 08, 2009, 11:52:13 PM »
it looks like in the newest recipe book that the coils are oriented 'sideways (horizontal)' on the 4' machine.  but i never do see a picture of the magnets to be sure that that is correct.  it uses a 9" rotor and (8) 2x1x.5 magnets.

i have searched the boards and i have found some posts with the coils oriented 'up/down(vertical)'...

does it matter which way they go as long as they fit?  i laid out a 9" circle and the magnets do fit sideways, just wasn't sure how this affected performance vs an 'up/down' orientation.

thanks

Dave

Page 25 in the original edition shows the magnet rotor with magnets mounted the other way to the bigger machines.

The tricky bit with the 4ft machine has always been the stator mounting. By turning the magnets round there is more room at the centre of the stator for mounting.

Turning the magnets round has little effect on performance as long as the disc is big enough to give clearance between magnets. Mounting the magnets the conventional way with the coils as intended for the new mounting would badly affect performance.

apparently i am doing something wrong.  if i draw the stator to the dimensions given for the 4', the coils don't fit like the drawing shows.  this is using a coil w/ the dimensions given, not actually wound, so not 100% sure that that dimension is accurate either.
