Homebrew Wind Workshop at the Evergreen Institute Part 2

Blade Carving

Paul laying out the 12' diameter blades.

It was great the Scotty could come with us, because of that the blades turned out perfectly.

Mimi carving blades with a draw knife.

Pictured above, Bill and Paul carving blades.

All the work, except for final finish was done with draw knifes.  We used no power tools.

Jess finishing up with a plane.  Almost all the finish work was done with a plane and a bit of sandpaper.

Alternator Work

Andy winding coils.  The 10 foot and 12 foot turbines were 48 Volt.  The little 7 footer was 12 volts.  The machines were wound with 70 turns of #13 guage, 105 turns of #15, and 70 turns of #13 respectively.  It did confuse folks that the 7' and the 12' were both wound with same guage and same number of turns... it was purely coincidence that things work out that way.

Pictured above Walmer is fitting magnets to the rotors for the 12' turbine.

I demonstrate how to connect coils in the mold.

Dave wired up the stator for the 12 foot turbine.

Pictured above the 12 foot stator ready for casting.  All the stators came out really nicely.

Casting the stator for the 10 foot wind turbine.  Two gallons of vinyl ester was just barely enough to do all three machines.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.
