Wind Generator
« on: March 29, 2005, 06:13:23 PM »
Hello. I am trying to make a miniature wind generator for a project in one of my classes. I am in grade 12 and would like some help. I have a blade design, the NACA 4412. I would like to know how should i rotate it for maximum efficiency. I would also like to know the best way to attach the blades to the center hub. If there are any sites that you have found on your travels, please tell me. All help will be greatly appreciated.

You might want to spend a little time searching this forum since most (if not all) the questions you'll have will have been broached here at one time or another.

Having just helped my daughter finish a school project on wind generators here are a couple of questions you may (or may not) have thought of so far:

   * How much power is required for your project?  A small wind generator is nice for demonstration purposes but if you have a specific use for the generated power you will want to be sure that your generator can meet the needs.  For example, the demo is going to light some lights and spin a merry-go-round.  There's not a lot of power available to a set of blades with only 12" or so swept area.  (Very) roughly

      Power(watts) = 0.0012 * V^3 * D^2

where V is the wind speed in mph

D is rotor diameter in feet

   * How will you drive the generator blades?  Will this unit be placed in the wind or will you spin the blades by hand or ???

   * Are you going to build your own generator or use an DC motor?  Most DC motors like high RPMs which impacts your blade TSR.

Good luck with your project.

Paul

If the BLADES are just a part of the total project, you should search this board for Zubwoofer and Sputnic. Both types are cheap and easy to make, and are functional.

Flat blades work OK too.

Even a 20" window fan blade works.

Here is a little about zubwoofer's and a simple hub.

This is easy,

A few hours searching here will get you more usable info than anywhere else!

Let us know what you end up wth,
