Old computer kit
«

Hi Guys
I am working in a computer centre at the minute where old mainframe computers, printers, tape drives and tape library robots are still being used but will soon be decommissioned. Can anyone advise me what I should ask for to get some useful stuff for making windturbines? I have already built one using a Volvo strut which worked great until it burned up one windy night
Cheers
Alibro

They won't let me. Here in Europe companies are forced by law to dispose of equipment in an eco friendly way, so they must pay recycling companies to remove the kit. They might let me take small bits and piecies but not the whole lot.
I have read about people using tape drive motors but I don't know anything about them or where to find the motors in the tape drives.

Search 'Ametek' or 'TDM'.
Also old '#29' neos, that I believe came from old computer assemblies. They were used in the "Wood103" under th wind section at otherpower dot com, at the top left.

The Tape Drive Motors drive the spindles that the reels of tape are mounted on.

Grab the motors off of the 9-track tape drives, the power supplies, and the cabinets. These things might even be old enough to recover some gold off the circiut boards.
