500 Watts at last from Hard Drive Mags
« on: September 27, 2006, 11:27:28 AM »
Hi,

Today I am happy

I have been persisting with hard drive magnets for quite some time now.

My goal was to be able to generate half a kilowatt using as many recycled parts as possible.

Yesterday I ran a new cable between the genny and the batteries (120 metres.)

The wire is quite thick and doubled up in places.

The difference this made to the output into the batteries was stunning.

I was beginning to think something was wrong or that I should give up using hard drive mags.

I had even purchased over the net 32 neos to replace the hd mags because I was starting to think (even though I knew better) hd mags were inferior.

This morning before work I checked the mill because it was quite windy.

I watched the ammeter hit 40 amps plus several times.

Into 12 volt batteries that exceeds 500 watts in my calculations.

The tower is all from recycled pipe , bolts etc.

The magnets are all from computer hard drives.

The wood for the props are from an old set of stairs.

The metal discs were scavenged from a dumpster - dunno what someone had planned for them.

The concrete for the footings I bought bags of cement and mixed by hand.

all the reo & rebars were recycled.

The copper for the coils is from microwave oven transformers.

The fibreglass and resin I bought.

Welding rods I bought.

Total cost - approx $200.00 aud.

Labour - to me that is not a cost (sitting inside watching tv is a dead loss).

Twin disc, 16 Mags per disc

12 Coils, 70 turns 1mm copper per coil, 4 coils per phase.

Rotation direction so that if prop blades bend , the motion is away from the tower.

I'd like to nominate Mick S for the Forcefield Hero of the Day. Congradulations on your success! And a good looking mill, even if it is made of junk. 500 watts. WOW!

That is way too cool.  Did you also happen to salvage the magnets from the magnatron tube of the microwave(s)?  Someone out there (windstuffnow?) mentioned building one with these...Also, what size wire are you making the run with?

I can only hope to come close....Good Job!

Hey Mick

I must say well done and getting 40 amps from junk you need a handshake. I have stacks of dead hard drives and this makes me want to try this.

Hi Mick

Hope you don't mind me asking but what type of hard drives did you get your mags from? Also how many did you use ie did you double them up or put two beside each other? I am building something similar and take great encouragement from your experience.

Hi Mick, that is very impressive 500 watts for 200.00 AUD = £79.6268 GBP.

I run gotwind.org, and have a competition for designing and making a wind generator for less than £100.

We are looking for everyone to use their skill and ingenuity to design a DIY wind generator for under £100 ($175 U.S.D)

http://www.gotwind.org/Competition.htm

Entrants already

Yours would win hands down if it were submitted - It's free and the closing date has been extended to 31st March 07.

Just email me or reply here if you would like to submit your entry.

Mick, thank you for the advices you gave me so far. While the search for bad hard drives makes many people here laugh, I now have the proof that it's worth it.

500 free Watts would restore my pride in no time :-)

Is that the 300 hard drives mill? That's my unicorn...

Bravo! I think you deserve congratulations for the way you seem to make the most of your time. And resources. You should enter that competition and win for all of us, the hard disk magnet scouts :-D

I also am curious. What brand of hard drives did you get the magnets from? How many individual hard drive magnets did you use? Stacked how thick? And you used two disks of magnets? Also, I saw how you cut the magnets in half. Are the half magnets that you can get from hard drive of any use?

Thank you so much for building this, what an inspiration!! I have been attempting to make an alternator from hard drive magnets but I hit a wall.
