10' Homebrew ???'s
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:39:20 AM »
Hello all, I have decided to build a couple of 10'ers and will probably have quite a few questions on the way. I have to reread the instructions a lot, probably most of these answers are somewhere in front of me, but I may be having trouble finding it. Any ways, gonna go with the 1"x2"X1/2" blocks, 14 awg 2 in hand,  and about to make the coil winder. What I needed to know was the dimensions of the pin placement for the I.D. of the coil, from the outside of the pins, both top, bottom, and from top to bottom. Now also, I think I also seen someone winding a coil with 14 awg, 2 in hand, 37 wraps for lower cut in, just adding an additional wrap.  Is there a post regarding what the performance change might expected that I can reread regarding this deviation. Any other advise before I get started building is welcome. Thank you, Joe

here is the site you are talking about in the coil winder part http://www.otherpower.com/turbineplans.html but i noticed that it dosnt say exactly how far apart the pins are.  But I think its 3/4" bottom 1 1/8" top and 1 3/4" tall so a 1 3/4" circle.  Performance wise it should make it start up in a lower wind but stall the blades more in a higher one unless you go a bigger blade.  Some others should be able to help you more.

I usually make the hole in the coil about 1" wide at the top, 3.4" wide at the bottom, and about 2" tall (or a touch less).

Actually - the extra two windings...  they're not really extra - I just find it works a bit better.  Rectifier losses eat over 10% in a 12V machine so this keeps the cutin at about 140 rpm after rectifiers.  It doesn't stall in higher winds and you'd surely not want larger blades on it.  If anything - a slightly smaller blade might be safer.

The 10' machine actually works really well (a bit better I think) if we reduce the number of windings and use larger magnets and larger wire, but as it is there it's pretty good I think - it's probably right on the edge of 'risky' if you don't furl early though.  We've made lots of these, so far 2 have burned out.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Dan, I think you mean 3/4 inch and not 3.4 inch right?

Thank you, Dan you said a couple of extra winds, which you then would be talking a total of 38?

Thanks, Joe
