certifications needed to connect small wind to grid in UK
« on: October 23, 2006, 06:29:36 PM »
Dear Folks,
I am trying to figure out exactly what certifications a small wind turbine needs to connect to the grid in UK.  The turbine has an inverter in it.
(1) I am aware that it needs to comply to G.83/1 Annex C
(2) Does it need to be IEC61400-2 certified as well?
(3) Any other standards?

Kind regards,
Nitish

Have you contacted the utility company / government utility to which you intend to connect?  In my area (Alberta, Canada) there are standards published by my utility company that I must meet before connecting a generator.

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.
System spec: 135w BP multicrystalline panels, Xantrex C40, DIY 10ft (3m) diameter wind turbine, Tri-Star TS60, 800AH x 24V AGM Battery, Xantrex SW4024

Here in the western US so many of the laws and rules for grid-tying require instalation by a licensed contractor that (at my wife's suggestion) I'm considering getting a contractor's license, just to hook up my own.  B-)

If that works out I might also end up with a second carreer once I retire from the Silicon Valley grind.

Contact the utility company Npower, they are about the only company that operates net metering in the UK. You will need two electric meters (no winding your meter back here) and it will probably cost about £150 to connect - that is if you get planning permission to errect a wind turbine on your property.
