Would these work unaltered???
« on: February 14, 2007, 04:06:05 AM »
I was poking around on the GSA site and stumbled on these tow motors out in CA.

MOTORS, ELECTRICAL, 50 HP, 3 PH 220/440V, 875 RPM EST 2 EACH. REPAIRS REQUIRED. (1491A9-6256#0006)

They have what appears in the picture to be a diesel motor hooked to them now, so i can only think that they are currently being used as a generator. You can look at them on gsaauctions.gov under miscellaneous in CA. There is a picture.

I suppose they would have they normal problem of wasting power self exciting.... But 875 rpm for these volts is pretty good right???

Take a fricken crane and 25 foot blades I suppose, but she would bbe a beast I think....

Thoses are air compressors.  the motors are 8 pole. If the motor is still good hooked up to something like a VW diesel, it could power a few houses or grid tie on bio.

Yea, I was going to say that those are 3 stage air compressors run off of a nice, slow-speed induction motor.  I bet the only thing wrong with the assemblies are the rings on the compressor heads.

If you know somebody with a flatbed and a forklift, offer something over copper scrap value for them, and they'll be yours.

Never mind... you won't need the flatbed.  I thought it said 10 in the lot -- there are only 2.

Have you seen any Wind Blade Horsepower charts Tom?

Typed it into the OtherPower search bar a couple of different ways

but came up with nothing.

One of the old Windmill Companies put out a Horsepower Chart

going from 6 to 16 foot Wind Wheels.

A 16 footer put out .34 HP at 10 MPH, - 1.15 HP at 15, - 2.76 at 20,

9.39 HP at 30

and 22.30 HP at 40 MPH.

Would guess they were built more for shear Horsepower than for high RPM.

It would be interesting to see a HP chart for modern Wind Turbine blades

if anyone has one laying around.

Thanks, Dave
