ENERTECH 1800
« on: March 28, 2007, 11:53:09 PM »
I have the opportunity to buy an enertech 1800 for around a $1000. The turbine is all there but doesn't turn. The owner said it's out of balance. All the controlls are also there. So I'm asking the board of wisdom if this is worth the money. I also have a chance to purchase an enertech 4kw machine in about the same condition with a 60 ft heavy duty tower for $6000. Sorry for the long winded post and I hope I put this in the right section. Thanks in advance

Hi Sid - I don't really know much about these at all but - I have read/heard that these machines often had gear box issues.  that might explain why it's stuck.

I moved your posting to the 'wind' section where it's a bit more visible - perhaps somebody who knows more about them will contribute here.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

You might also post this on the awea-wind-home group on groups.yahoo.com if you don't get any answers here.

YOu might talk with Dan who has or had one for a long time.  His email in 2 halves is  Witapple and then @aol.com  I broke it in half to protect him from whatever nonsense is around.

In the 'Home Power' issue #82 there is an article about rebuilding such a machine.

Hi Sid,

I can offer a few thoughts...

First, both of these machines are induction generators and require utility power to operate, most commonly in net-metered installations.  The 1800 is 120VAC unit; the 4 kW is 240V.

The 1800 used a hydraulic brake.  It is on the upwind end (away from the blades), and can be manually released by depressing the valve on the top with a screwdriver.  This should allow it to turn in the normal direction of rotation.  If it won't budge in either direction, it is probably gearbox related.  In either case an out of balance rotor is not the cause.

The 4 kW is a better size for the "average home", and the tower is a plus.  My feeling is the prices in both cases are too high.  We recently took down an 80' guyed tower with a 4 kW for salvage value only.  Keep in mind that you may have to factor in the cost of a crane unless you have rigging gear.  You should be able to negotiate a considerably lower price.

These units are relatively simple mechanicsally and electrically, and parts are available still.  I can get you some sources if you need parts.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the info so far. Talked to the guy with the 4kw and ended up getting the generator for $300.00. I tried to negotiate with the other owner for the 1800 but so far the lowest he will go is $800 even though it's in worse shape then the 4kw. Will definitly keep you in mind for the parts.

Thanks

Sid

Sir, I am looking for a Enertech 1800 Turbine. Would you have a contact or source..? I saw your older post about 4000 turbine. Thanks, Mike
