Will Corry was or is a personal friend of mine. I haven't heard from him in years.

He built and patented this wind device 22 years ago. I thought I would post this for the VAWT fans.

Not blank on my end.

I'll save you the trouble...it's complex and if there's anything new about it it's probably not worth the effort. You'd be better off making a few simple S vawts instead of spending the same time and money building one of these.

I just skimmed it though, so I could easily be wrong. It looks like maybe the blades change angles and/or shape? I dunno..KISS.

I've got a few questions if you happen to know the answers to them.

Did anyone ever actually build one of these?

Did it actually function with any advantage over the simpler designs out there?

It looks cool but wow is that ever complex looking with all the moving pieces. I'd expect maintenance to be a huge part of life with units like this.

Yeah, but not just using a hook and line or a cast net but a whole fleet of trawlers...

Still; 99.999% vapor as far as hardware goes near as I can tell.

It self regulates and can be built of simple materials. Once one gets past the complexity of the drawings it is pretty simple. It may have an advantage in low wind areas.

This particular patent was not awarded to your friend Will Corry but to Joe Storm.

The Corry patent has nr. 4.457.669 (1984 patent for a "Jibe windmill") and can be found here:

-Looks too difficult and problematic to me. I like only ONE moving part myself!! I'm stickin with the simple good ol' "Squirrel cage" Vawt! Air flows thru it real good. I made a proto-type rotor today and it looks VERY promising. It goes fast. Looked like over 200rpm in almost nothing of a breeze. It was one of those 0-4mph occasional breeze evenings. I just got it up a few hours ago. It is only 18" diam. by 39" high. I'm making the bigger one hopefully this week. I believe it will self-regulate in high winds. Can't wait to see that!

Does anyone know where I can find a 10 foot piece of 6" diam. PVC THIN WALL drain(or sewer) pipe?? I can only find 4" which is what I make the proto out of.

I dont know where you live but if your near Ohio I am lucky enough to live just down the road from a plastic pipe company. They sell to us locals. not to sure what all sizes they sell but I do remember when I used to work there I made what they call 6" sand pipe. I can ask them all the sizes. now shipping would be the big issue.

BrianK, ---Where In Ohio. I am in Ohio. Is it near Columbus or Cleveland? I've never heard of 'Sand pipe'. I believe that 'ditch pipe' is thick and expensive. I was looking for something 6" diam. -but not TOO expensive. That 4" PVC(thin wall) drain pipe I got was only $7 a 10' section at Lowes. Do you have the name of the Company?

Due to the reduction in stiffness as the diameter gets larger you might be better off to just get regular 6 or 8 inch pvc which should not be hard to find. The drain pipe is available in those sizes too but if it is hard to locate or much farther off to pickup then the savings on pipe cost may get lost in time and gas cost.

Watch around new apartment construction or water or sewer construction as they often discard anything leftover that is not a full length piece.

Too many things that can go wrong. Not KISS, for sure. Looks expensive to build, also.

Yeah, thats a long way away. Thanks anyway. I was just hoping someone might know a common store that sold it, that I overlooked.

I am believing that the WEIGHT of the rotor (&PVC)is a major issue. I'm just going to keep using that thin lightweight (1/8" thick) 4" diam. "Drain pipe" PVC for now. That design that Ron just showed us sure looks heavy to me! Also, BALANCE is very important as I'm learning.(especially for a strong wind) Thats why Im afraid of depending on moving parts on or in a rotor, myself. However, someone might get an idea from part of that design. Thanks for showing it.
