Working on the tower now
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:29:24 AM »
Hello All:

We have a water storage tank that is 7' in diameter and 12' long, it is 3/8" thick, and it is sunk in the ground 2'.  The tank is really heavy on its own and it will be filled with water to boot.  There are eye-bolt tabs on each end of the tank for tying guy wires to.  We are hoping to raise our tower up against this tank as the whole purpose of our turbine is to charge batteries for our well pump.

We have 2 - 16' pipes that are 2.037 id and 2.371 od.  We have 1 - 21' of the same size pipe.  We also have 6' of 1 1/2" id pipe to use to mount the turbine assembly to.  We are thinking of using the 16' pipes to make an a-frame against the storage tank with the base of the a-frame 12' (the length of the tank).  The 21' pipe would make the thrd leg of the triangle base.  We'd like to set this all 2' down with a bunch of concrete and auto, or truck u-bolts.  With the way the kite was acting in that area, we'd like the tower to be tilt-able, and we'd like to stay about 20' in the air.

Here are a couple quick sketches - I hope y'all can make sense of them.

Does this sound feasible?  Thank you so much for all your help.

photos posted here have to be less than 640 pixels wide the top one of yours is 900 pixels wide i will let it go this time but in the future if you are over the limit the offending photos will be removed....

Oops, the turbine assembly weighs about 75 pounds with 6 blades for a 5' diameter spin.

Yeah, that's the way the pictures posted.  We've tried to make it right to no avail.  Maybe you could tell us how to fix the problem?  We would appreciate some advice about the tower too.  I think I finally got it figured out - sorry for being fairly new and still learning to use this forum.

We're using pipe instead of guy wires for two main reasons.

  1.  We have the pipe.
  2. (and more importantly) The storage tank is right next to the road that goes to the back part of the property.  We don't really have the room to use guy wires without moving fences and obstructing the road and such.....
