Vinyl Ester Resin - where do you get it from?
« on: August 05, 2008, 12:36:23 PM »
I am still building my first alternator and am getting close to casting rotor and stator

Design: 1.4m dia, single rotor, 12V, using Hugh Piggot's 4ft plans

from previous posts I have gleaned that i should be using:

Resin for rotor - West system epoxy

Resin for stator - vinyl ester

the West epoxy is easy to find as it is used for boats

but where do I source the vinyl ester resin - I am in UK

I'm in the UK too.

I used 'Fastglas' resin that is for automotive fibreglass repairs, I think this is polyester.  It cost around £13 for possibly a litre and I bought some fibreglass tissue at the same time.  I put a couple of layers of tissue in the mould, painted them with mixed resin, put in the coils, filled with resin and then put on more tissue followed by the lid.

I had to very quick because it set in around 15 mins.

One year on it's still ok, but I have a feeling that it's slightly brittle stuff and I'm usually quite careful handling it, perhaps needlessly; it could be much stronger than I think.

You get what you pay for of course, and I didn't want to pay a lot, trying to make the turbine on a very tight budget.  The only other options I could find were buying large amounts of stuff or very high prices.

Polyfibre in Birmingham list it but you need to look under epoxy to find it if I remember.

thank you Flux

I have also found it listed at CFS in Redruth, Cornwall under Special Purpose Resins

www.cfsnet.co.uk

However they sell it in 5kg as the smallest size - I had hoped to find it in smaller quantities
