« on: December 10, 2008, 12:35:04 AM »
Just got home and had my first bird strike. Cut it's head and leg clean off. 2 meter blade and 20 Mph.

It's actually part of breaking a new turbine, follows just after the 3 day's with no wind. On the law of averages there will be no more sacrafical feathered friends.

Hahaha now see, what comes to mind here is something about moving the dump load to underneath the mill, and you then have a self powered bird baker with automatic slicing. What a shame turkeys can't fly - next thanksgiving could be a breeze if conditions were just right.... X-P~

Well, it went quickly at least.  That's another good thing.

Maybe to help the birds go quickly and painlessly, you could sharpen the blades ?

A turkey hit on my windmills would take off a blade!

The turkey would be undamaged.

Well, I mean you would have to duct tape some razor blades to the edge, right? Surely a mill optimized for only producing power would not be ideal... LOL

Turkeys can fly.  But they're so heavy they prefer not to.

This is why turkey enclosures use low fences.  If you use a high fence they'll fly over it and escape.  But with a low fence they try to go around it.  And they're so dumb they don't get that going all the way around the pen back to the same spot means they're enclosed.  So they go around and around and around...

I think the ones they dropped onto a mall parking lot from a helicopter in Cincinatti all of those years ago as a holiday give away didn't fly all that well. . . "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!!!"-Carlson  Rich

Ok. I concede. You got me. All of you. A little research reveals that a (now unofficial) event occurs in a little town called Yellville, Arkansas. Rich's comment forced me to look up helicopters, turkeys, and Cincinatti in a cautious Google search. Apparently, the WKRP episode was loosely based on actual events involving planes rather than helicopters. I digress.

Sooo, let me recant my story a bit with some transmogrification...

How about...

It's not too early to plan for a Christmas goose, is it?!?

People have no idea what a frozen turkey will do when shot out of a cannon.

Turkeys should be thawed before being released to the public.

Every time I take my windmill down, it's splattered with bird-sh##.  You'd think they wouldn't come close to a contraption like that.  I think they perch on a blade when the wind isn't blowing, then "drop ballast" when they take off, once it does start to turn.

Never found pieces at the base of the tower, though.  LOL

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

I have the same problem as Sparweb.  My mill is low to the ground (13ft) and painted brown-- so the Poo really shows up bad all over it.  In fact, they actually MATE on my windmill a LOT. Especially in the spring.  Of course it is not turning during this 'activity'.

My mill actually Creates more birds!

I have Tens of thousands of birds flying and landing just feet from my mill in a giant field when it is running--but to date never seen even one kill yet.

They must know that when 'Big momma' is flyin' , to stay away!

Unfortunely though, a year ago a big beautiful Hoot OWl flew straight into the door of my truck when I was driving on a country road and broke his neck clean. (Went back and looked)  -Sad.

Cars, trucks, and windows are what kill millions of birds each day. Sad, but the Way it is.

My friend had a flying squirrel fly into his car window at 35~45MPH?

The window in question was open.  Undamaged wildlife in the car.

Lucky one of them didn't take out one of us.

He tells it better.

I used to take a few deer a year from an area near 82 and 11.

It was leveled for a housing developement.

It has road names like "Deer Trail" and "Quail Hollow".

No deer or quail near it.

Anymore.

My Dad would drop me off on one end of "Mud Run" with a 22 when I was 8 or 10, with a couple boxes of shells.  Maybe a few Stingers for fox and coon.  Had to walk a few miles to get back.

Could shoot about anything in any direction.  Just like when my Dad was 10.

Now it is called Larson-West.  So much traffic a guy can't pee in the middle of the road.  2 stores and 2 schools even!

Not much wildlife there now.  Very few trees or brush.  No windmills at all.

Windmills do not cause the issues of less birds.

Sad, but the Way it is.  Yes.

CME;

Great point that gets very little "sound bite" time in the media.

Never seen a dead bird near mine. I am sure it happens eventually in most installations.

I have personally probably killed thousands of birds in my lifetime of driving. A dozen or so deer, one moose and one pig, too but nobody goes crazy over those losses or calls for getting shed of road transportation.

Driving at night here is a form of Russian roulette played with rolling stock and our massive local deer herd. Not a question of if you will hit a deer if you drive after dark but when and how hard. Particularly interesting on a motorcycle.

I have watched a juvenile bald eagle try to roost on the prop a half dozen times before flying off to a tree. Was kind of funny seeing him swoop in grab it and try to hold on as it rotated then give up only to return when it settled again.

It is good to hear when bird strikes happen simply for the data it provides.

Saw a claim that the big mills were researched and they take about one bird per year.  I.e. drop in the bucket compared to cars, or even buildings with glass windows.
