Where to buy magnets, and wire.
« on: July 21, 2009, 04:33:42 AM »
First, I would like to say that I have searched the forums, and have looked on the products pages for this site and have found nothing that I can use. If I missed something, please feel free to point me in the right direction.

What I have found through searching the web is CMS ( http://cms-magnetics.amazonwebstore.com ), and Magnets4less ( http://www.magnet4less.com ). I was wondering if anyone has had any dealings with either of these online retailers, and if they have been favorable or not. One site seems to be the only site to get magnet wire from without dealing with a large OEM, and the other has seemingly too good of a deal on magnets. I have read some in the past about Magnets4less, and some of it did not seem favorable, but was not pertaining to Magnet wire.

Also, I understand you get what you pay for and all that, but if these two retailers are not the stores to buy from; Where ? That is all I really want to know; Where to find, and buy materials for building my own wind turbine from scratch. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've purchased 3 large spools of magnet wire and about 150 magnets of various sizes from Magnet4Less.  No problems at all.  The Essex wire is pristine since they just distribute it, and the magnets are typical for plated neos (some bubbling occurs under the plating if exposed to the elements...but only on 1 out of 50 magnets).  They seem to have a boat from China just for themselves, and bring over everything including those WindMax turbines and blades.

I am very pleased with their product.  I bought the 2" x 1/2" N42 disc neos.

I have received some very good deals from magnet4less.com . Purchased probable 250 magnets from them in the past. Best deal was 32 N50 2" diameter by 1" thick. Those set me back about 15 bucks each which is what I usually see magnets half that thick sell for. I also got 100 1/2" thick by 1" round N50's for about $2 each on one of their e-bay auctions.

You can get some super cheap neo magnets from Deal Extreme. They are a bit on the thin side but they are so cheap that stacking them shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the feedback guys (and gals ? ). I do appreciate the feedback. Having people like you around to ask of previous experiences helps a lot especially in these "shady" days of eCommerce. I really liked the idea of buying 11lb spools from magnets4less that have the OEM wrap on them still so as to not get a bum deal on badly rewound wire. I did however wish that CMS was better known among you, and guess I will have to give magnets4less my business on the magnets as well.

I do wish that Otherpower had what I needed in stock, and at a reasonable price, but when you're building on a shoestring budget . . . even having enough money for resin can be an issue. Nothing personal, just can not afford it on my current budget :( I will however buy "the book" :)

Oh, and by the by, for those of you who are like me, and can not afford to buy just any old tool. Here is a link for making your own draw knife. Probably not big enough, but should scale well. At least that is my hope. Not even being able to afford a draw knife without cutting into your budget is a problem, but if you have the materials, and the skill we can overcome :)

Ghurd, nice to hear from you again :)

Well, what you say makes sense I guess, but for the price of two file handles you can make your own. Even $15-$25 is too much for me * right_now . I really did not want to get too much into details, but I only have money for the magnets, and wire right now. Everything else I need or make will be from scrap, except perhaps fiberglass materials.

Besides, I am very good at fabricating  with metals by hand, and really enjoy doing so. When you give me power tools is when i start having problems.

Now, I love my miniature hand plain, and use it *a lot
but I think it is item to use it as it was meant to be used, and get another tool to take its place. a More proper tool for the job.

applied magnets at magnet4less.com has lot of magnets very cheap and wire. I have purchased from them a lot over the past few years both personally and as a business. They might look a little shabby but they great and one of the largest distributors of magnets in the US. They also have an ebay store i would check out, a lot of the time they sell sets on ebay for less than what they do on there web site.
