12 volt computer power?
« on: November 11, 2004, 11:09:57 AM »
I have been cruising around on the discussion board for about a month  and some one had a link to a supplier of 12 volt computer power supplies thought it was really neat But I can't find it again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks Scott

I have found several places that make 12vdc input computer power supplys if that is what you are looking for. These are standard atx size but they have a lot of others there too. A bit pricey but great if you want to build a custom machine. I am working on one to run on about 30 to 30 watts, well that is if I ever get all the parts together.

First of all i have not tried this but I think if you open a stock computer power

supply and conect your 12vdc power leads to the + and - on the output of the rectifer

thats connected to the transformer from the 110 vac input computer schould run

ok anyone tried this ?   george  ps make sure polarety is correct or you will defently let out the magic blue smoke

Sorry but this wont work as you also need +5, -5 and a standby +5 volts.

yes i relise +5 and -5 vdc is needed but this will be supplyed be the exesting voltage regulators in the power supply good point though is to check and make sure

voltages are close may have to adjust reg circuit  anybody know typ output voltage of transformer secoundary after rectifer in typ atx power supply off hand?   george

Is that true?  I'd have thought it was a center-tap or something.  (Well, I guess an off-center tap???)

No each voltage is produced from a separate rectifier and regulator circuit. Simply applying 12 VDC across the 12 volt output (yellow & black) will not work.

You are on the right track.  You just need to 'adjust' a few things.

Plus or minus 5v can be made with a 7805 or 7905.  Thats a good start.

Don't connect DC to a transformer.  That's a short.

Don't experiment with a good computor.

Look at the amps ratings on the +5 volt portion of a 300 watt power supply, it usually runs to 20+ Amps, a 7805 won't cut it.

These DC P.C. power supplies are designed for this job. Rolling you own while possible (I have read an article on converting a regular PC supply) is not for the casual tinkerer. I have a commercial 48 volt input model put aside for when I finish my RE system.

This may help you if you dont mind getting 'new' hardware.
